Milk and increased fracture

This is a great article and once again proves that we need to eliminate dairy from our diets.   Main from the fact that we are exposed to hormones and antibiotics through diary products but also how it effects the chemicals in our body.  This article does suggestion using dairy products aside from milk which I would disagree with.  I would suggest using coconut/almond yogurt and avoiding cheeses. There are so many nutritional yeast cheese recipes you can use instead!

I have not tried this recipe but I will be trying it soon.  Look, it even has a vegetable in it.  What better way to get a vegetable than in the form and flavor of cheese!

 

Science has once again shattered the myth that milk makes strong bones.  A new Swedish study links drinking milk to higher rates of bone fractures and even death.[i]

The study tracked the eating habits of over 60,000 women for 20 years and over 45,000 men for 15 years. Researchers found that drinking more milk did NOT lead to lower risks of bone fracture.  In fact, women who drank three glasses of milk per day broke more bones.  Compared to women who drank less than one glass per day, heavy milk drinkers had a 60% greater risk of breaking a hip and a 16% higher risk of breaking any bone.

But it gets worse.  People who drank more milk also had a higher risk of dying from any cause.  For every glass of milk they drank every day, women had a 15% higher risk of death and men had a 3% higher risk.

Why does milk lead to more broken bones and higher death rates?

Researchers found that milk drinkers had more biomarkers for oxidative stress and inflammation. They suggested that high levels of two sugars in milk – lactose and galactose – were the cause.  In fact, they noted that low doses of D-galactose are often used in animal studies to induce signs of aging.  Studies link D-galactose to a shortened life span, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, neurodegeneration, decreased immune response, and gene transcriptional changes.  The dose used to obtain those results in animals is equivalent to a human drinking one to two glasses of milk per day.

Milk may be high in calcium but too much calcium can break your bones.

If milk doesn’t build strong bones, what does?  Here are 10 foods proven to be a better choice for reducing your fracture risk and keeping your bones strong.

1. Yogurt. 

The Swedish study found that fermented milk had the opposite effect on your bones as drinking plain milk.  For each serving of fermented milk products women reduced their hip fracture and death rates by 10 to 15%.  Examples of fermented milk products include yogurt, kefir, and sour cream.  Fermented dairy was also linked to lower oxidative stress and inflammation.

2. Cheese.

Like fermented dairy the Swedish researchers found eating cheese also lowers fracture and death rates.  Cheeses are also rich in vitamin K2 which is essential to strong bones.  The best choices with the highest levels of vitamin K2 are Gouda, Brie, and Edam.  Other good cheeses for your bones include Cheddar, Colby, Swiss, and Gruyere.  Stick to traditionally made cheeses and stay away from Velveeta, soy cheese, and other modern processed “cheese products.”

3.  Natto

A traditionally fermented soy product popular in Asia, natto is another food high in vitamin K2.  In a study of 72 premenopausal women, researchers found that those who ate more natto had better bone formation.[ii]  And a University of Tokyo study concluded that natto consumption may contribute to the relatively lower fracture risk in Japanese women.[iii]

4. Green Tea. 

The Mediterranean Osteoporosis Study showed that drinking up to 3 cups of tea per day was associated with a 30% reduction in the risk of hip fractures in women as well as men over 50 years of age.

And researchers from Texas Tech University showed that 500 mg of green tea polyphenols improves bone health after three months and muscle strength at six months. That’s about what you get in four to six cups of green tea.  The green tea compounds support osteoblast activity (bone building) and suppress osteoclasts activity (bone breakdown).[iv]

5. Prunes.

Florida State University tested bone density in 100 menopausal women over 12 months.  Half were told to eat about 10 dried plums a day.  The other half ate dried apples.  Researchers found the prune eaters had significantly higher bone mineral density in the forearm and spine.  Other studies showdried plums slow bone loss.

6.  Pomegranates

Pomegranates are known to relieve symptoms of menopause including bone loss.  In a 2004 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, rats who had their ovaries removed suffered accelerated bone loss, a typical symptom of menopause.  But when they were fed an extract of pomegranate juice and seeds for just 2 weeks, their bone mineral loss reverted to normal rates.[v]

7.  Oranges.

Osteoporosis has been called “scurvy of the bones” because lack of vitamin C has been linked to brittle bones.  In animal studies feeding rats orange pulp significantly improved bone strength. Other studies show bone mineral density is higher in women who supplement with vitamin C.[vi]  Eat fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C for bone health.  Choose oranges, strawberries, papaya, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, cantaloupe, pineapple, kiwi fruits, and cauliflower.

8.   Black Seed (Nigella Sativa)

In animal studies researchers showed that nigella sativa can reverse osteoporosis.

9.  Cumin

A 2008 animal study showed that cumin seeds inhibit loss of bone density and strength as effectively as estrogen.[vii]

10.  Chocolate

Bone density is linked to magnesium intake. [viii]   But magnesium levels in the bone decrease with age. [ix] Your body needs magnesium to convert vitamin D to its active form and absorb calcium. Only about 20% of Americans get the recommended daily amount of 420 mg of magnesium for men and 320 mg for women.

Dark chocolate has a healthy 176 mg of magnesium in a 3.5 ounce bar.  Look for chocolate that is organic, fair-trade, and as dark as possible with at least 70% cacao content.  The higher the cacao content, the lower the sugar content.

Milk does the body NO good

This is such a hard thing to get into peoples heads.  I work in the “bone”field and I hear it daily how we need to drink our milk.  It is frustrating to be honest but what can you do but keep on keeping on. I try to promote calcium intake from other sources besides milk. See chart below.  I encourage eating a rainbow of foods and to just eat a variety.  In doing so we get a range of nutrients!

Research is telling us that we couldn’t be more wrong. Milk is mostly hype and hardly healthy. At least, not the milk we drink today, which is vastly different from what our ancestors used to drink.Time was when waking up to a glass of milk or drinking some before bed time was considered a healthy habit. That rule no longer holds good and here’s why: milk found on the supermarket shelf is highly processed. Milk is an extremely acidic or “acidifying” food to begin with, and the homogenization and pasteurization process makes it all the more so. The problem with consuming milk on the basis that it supplies the body with calcium is that, in order for calcium to be absorbed by the body, it needs to be given adequate magnesium and vitamin C as well. Hence, ironic though it may seem, milk can have the opposite effect to what is desired: deplete the body of calcium in order to render the blood acid-neutral. So drinking milk doesn’t really help your bones. You’d be better off eating vitamin D instead. The fact remains that osteoporosis cannot be prevented by high milk consumption. On the contrary, the animal protein found in milk could well be the cause of bone loss.

Another thing that we need to be wary of is the fact that the dairy industry is free to supply cows with growth hormones that increase the production of milk artificially. The laboratory made hormone, bovine growth hormone, or rBGH, is known to increase the levels if insulin growth factor (IGF) in the blood of those consuming it, linking it with the incidence of several types of cancer.

Milk politics

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has an “up-to-date” food pyramid that recommends drinking three glasses of milk per day. Critics of this pyramid say that it has not been created in an authentic way with the consumer’s best interest at heart. They say that the pyramid is a reflection of the dairy industry’s vested interests.

According to Harvard scientist Dr. Willet, one of the most vociferous critics of the USDA food pyramid, the USDA’s claims are ridiculous, because according to him, there is very little evidence that milk reduces fractures. What is more, milk is a proven source of saturated fat and is linked to heart disease, increases risk of prostrate cancer, aggravates irritable bowel syndrome and creates digestive ills in those with lactose intolerance, which is approximately 75% of adults on the planet. Those doctors and nutritionists who advise against adding any dairy to your diet at all say that, while raw organic milk can be taken without the burden of pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and processing, the risks of dairy consumption outweigh the benefits anyway. Besides, there are other ways and dietary means to improve one’s health. The bottom line is simple: you don’t need milk to be healthy.

Yet, pro-milk propaganda is big. And the question that is being asked by the anti-dairy lobby is this: will authentic scientific evidence have any bearing on food policy and dietary guidelines that is simple to decipher or will consumers be fed with misinformation so the dairy industry will benefit?

Osteoporosis Around the World

Throughout the world, the incidence of osteoporosis correlates directly with animal protein intake. The greater the intake of protein, the more common and more severe will be the osteoporosis. In fact, world health statistics show that osteoporosis is most common in exactly those countries where dairy products are consumed in the largest quantities – the United States, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Nathan Pritikin studied the medical research on osteoporosis, and found no basis at all for the Dairy Council viewpoint:

African Bantu women take in only 350 mg. of calcium per day. They bear nine children during their lifetime and breast feed them for two years. They never have calcium deficiency, seldom break a bone, rarely lose a tooth… How can they do that on 350 mg. of calcium a day when the (National Dairy Council) recommendation is 1200 mg.? It’s very simple. They’re on a low-protein diet that doesn’t kick the calcium out of the body’.

At the other end of the scale from the Bantus are the native Eskimos.

If osteoporosis were a calcium deficiency disease it would be unheard of among these people. They have the highest dietary calcium intake of any people in the world – more than 2000 mg. a day from fish bones. Their diet is also the very highest in the world in protein – 250 to 400 grams a day. The native Eskimo people have one of the very highest rates of osteoporosis in the world.

In March, 1983, the Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported the results of the largest study of this kind ever undertaken. Researchers in Michigan State and other major universities found that, by the age of 65 in the United States:

  • Male vegetarians had an average measurable bone loss of 3%
  • Male meat-eaters had an average measurable bone loss of 7%
  • Female vegetarians had an average measurable bone loss of 18%
  • Female meat-eaters had an average measurable bone loss of 35%

Keeping our PH- levels in check

Keeping our blood at an essentially neutral pH is top priority for our body. If our blood were to become too acidic we would die. Accordingly, if the diet contains a lot of acid forming foods (meat, dairy, sugar and processed carbohydrates), then the body, in its wisdom, withdraws calcium from the bones and uses this alkaline mineral to balance the pH of the blood. Meat, eggs and fish are the most acid-forming of the foods, and hence the ones that cause calcium to be drawn from the bones to restore the pH balance. Most fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, generally yield an alkaline ash, and so require no depletion of calcium stores from the bones to maintain the neutrality of the blood.

In spite of its high calcium content, milk, due to its high protein content, and high acidity, appears actually to contribute to the accelerating development of osteoporosis. The occurrence of this disease in the United States has reached truly epidemic proportions, and the promotion of dairy products as an ‘answer’ to the suffering of millions seems, not only self-serving, but absolutely immoral and downright dishonest.

Just a few thoughts…

Making health meals is a priority and I will agree with anyone it is very time consuming.  I just try to bulk things together.  I will prepare my vegetables for the week on Sunday.  Then they are ready to grab and go! Also,   Soak your beans for 12-24 hours prior to cooking. I had not done this previously but since I started doing that I have noticed a difference in the effects of bean!  The gas and bloating is greatly reduced with soaking.  The purpose of soaking is to aid in digestion and breakdown.  I believe it has really helped.  If you have a steamer it will save you some much time!  You can do your beans and the sweet potato in your steamer!

Update on Milk and Aspertame

(NaturalNews) You probably already know that the FDA has declared war on raw milk and even helped fund and coordinate armed government raids against raw milk farmers and distributors. Yes, it’s insane. This brand of tyranny is unique to the USA and isn’t even conducted in China, North Kora or Cuba. Only in the USA are raw milk farmers treated like terrorists.

But now the situation is getting even more insane than you could have imagined: the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition with the FDA asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to secretly include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose.

Importantly, none of these additives need to be listed on the label. They will simply be swept under the definition of “milk,” so that when a company lists “milk” on the label, it automatically includes aspartame or sucralose. And if you’re trying to avoid aspartame, you’ll have no way of doing so because it won’t be listed on the label.

This isn’t only for milk, either: It’s also for yogurt, cream, sour cream, eggnog, whipping cream and a total of 17 products, all of which are listed in the petition at FDA.gov.

As the petition states:

IDFA and NMPF request their proposed amendments to the milk standard of identity to allow optional characterizing flavoring ingredients used in milk (e.g., chocolate flavoring added to milk) to be sweetened with any safe and suitable sweetener — including non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame.

This is all being done to “save the children,” we’re told, because the use of aspartame in milk products would reduce calories.

Milk industry specifically asks to HIDE aspartame from consumers

Astonishingly, the dairy industry is engaged in extreme doublespeak logic and actually arguing that aspartame should be hidden from consumers by not listing it on the label. Here’s what the petition says:

IDFA and NMPF argue that nutrient content claims such as “reduced calorie” are not attractive to children, and maintain that consumers can more easily identify the overall nutritional value of milk products that are flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners if the labels do not include such claims. Further, the petitioners assert that consumers do not recognize milk — including flavored milk — as necessarily containing sugar. Accordingly, the petitioners state that milk flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners should be labeled as milk without further claims so that consumers can “more easily identify its overall nutritional value.”

In other words, hiding aspartame from consumers by not including it on the label actually helps consumers, according to the IDFA and NMPF!

Yep, consumers are best served by keeping them ignorant. If this logic smacks of the same kind of twisted deception practiced by Monsanto, that’s because it’s identical: the less consumers know, the more they are helped, according to industry. And it’s for the children, too, because children are also best served by keeping them poisoned with aspartame.

Consumers have always been kept in the dark about pink slime, meat glue, rBGH and GMOs in their food. And now, if the IDFA gets its way, you’ll be able to drink hormone-contaminated milk from an antibiotics-inundated cow fed genetically modified crops and producing milk containing hidden aspartame. And you won’t have the right to know about any of this!

The FDA confirms this “secret” status of aspartame, stating, “If the standard of identity for milk is amended as requested by petitioners, milk manufacturers could use non-nutritive sweeteners in flavored milk without a nutrient content claim in its labeling.”

This is a clue to stop drinking processed milk and milk products altogether

There’s a bigger story here than just the industry hoping to get FDA approval to secretly put aspartame in milk products while not listing aspartame on the label.

The bigger question is this: If an industry is pushing to hide aspartame in its products, what else is it already hiding?

How about the pus content of its dairy products? How about its inhumane treatment of animals who are subjected to torture conditions and pumped full of genetically engineered hormones? How about the fact that homogenization and pasteurization turn a whole food into a dietary nightmare that promotes obesity, autoimmune disorders and cardiovascular disease?

There are lots of dirty little secrets in the dairy industry of course, and that doesn’t even get into the secret closed-door conversations to encourage the FDA to destroy the competition of raw milk.

The only rational answer to all this is to stop buying and consuming processed dairy products, period!

I gave up ALL milk products many years ago and have never looked back. I drink almond milk, not pus-filled pasteurized cow’s milk. (Click here for a recipe to make your own almond milk at home.) I don’t eat yogurt. If I want probiotics, I get them from tasty chewable probiotics supplements such as Sunbiotics. I parted ways with processed dairy products many years ago, and as a result, my cardiovascular health, skin health, digestive health and stamina have all remained in outstanding shape.

There’s also a philosophical issue here: Don’t buy products from an industry that habitually LIES about everything. The dairy industry is like a mafia. They actively seek to destroy the competition, keep consumers ignorant and monopolize the market. They run highly deceptive ads with ridiculous claims like, “drinking milk helps you lose weight” and other nonsense.

The U.S. dairy industry is steeped in deception at every level, and now they want you and your children to unknowingly drink aspartame that’s secretly blended into the product.

The dairy industry is to food as Lance Armstrong is to sports. It’s all a big lie, laced with secret chemicals and false claims.

Stop drinking milk. Stop financially supporting the food mafia.

Calcium leading to bone disease and Why??

25% of sixty-five year old women in the United States are diagnosed with osteoporosis. For a person technically to qualify for this label, it means she has lost 50- 75% of the original bone material from her skeleton. That is 1 out of every 4 women of sixty-five years old has lost over half her bone density! Today, more deaths are caused by osteoporosis than cancer of the breast and cervix combined.

Unfortunately, the loss of calcium and other minerals from the bones is a gradual process which goes on steadily for a long time before it becomes evident. There is no flashing red light to warn us that our bodies are losing calcium. And it is usually not apparent until loose teeth, receding gums, or a fractured hip show how brittle and chalky the bones have become. The end result of the skeletal structure’s gradual erosion is calcium-deficient bones that may break with the slightest provocation. Even a mere sneeze may crack a rib.

One of the reasons the decreasing bone density is hard to detect until it reaches such as unfortunate stage, is that even in extreme cases of osteoporosis, the calcium level of the blood is usually normal. In the body’s ranking of needs, the blood level of calcium takes definite priority over the bone level of calcium. The body needs calcium for vital operations, such as controlling muscular contractions, blood clotting, transmission of nerve impulses and other utterly essential tasks. When the body needs to supply calcium to the blood for any reason, it acts as if the bones were a ‘bank’ of stored calcium, and through a series of biochemical reactions a ‘check’ is drawn on the calcium bank. Your body draws calcium from your bones to supply calcium to your blood.

I used to believe that bones lost calcium only if there was not enough calcium in our diets. The National Dairy Council is the foremost spokesman for this point of view, and the solution they propose, not all that surprisingly, is for us all to drink more milk and eat more dairy products. In fact, the dairy industry has of late spent a great deal of money promoting this point of view; and it does seem logical. But modern nutritional research clearly indicates a major flaw in this perspective. Osteoporosis is, in fact, a disease caused by a number of things, the most important of which is excess dietary animal protein!

The correspondence between excess animal protein intake and bone resorption is direct and consistent. Even with very high calcium intakes, the more excess animal protein in the diet the greater the incidence of negative calcium balance, and the greater the loss of calcium from the bones.

One long-term study found that with as little as 75 grams of daily protein (less than three-quarters of what the average meat-eating American consumes) more calcium is lost in the urine than is absorbed by the body from the diet – resulting in a negative calcium balance. This is true even if the dietary calcium intake is as high as 1400 milligrams per day, far higher than the standard American diet.

Summarising the medical research on osteoporosis, one of the nation’s leading medical authorities on dietary associations with disease, Dr. John McDougall, says:

“I would like to emphasize that the calcium-losing effect of protein on the human body is not an area of controversy in scientific circles. The many studies performed during the past 55 years consistently show that the most important dietary change that we can make if we want to create a positive calcium balance that will keep our bones solid is to decrease the amount of proteins we eat each day. The important change is not to increase the amount of calcium we take in.”
